电子邮件称，一个黑客团体已经控制了“天网”卫星。他们是一群由电脑专家、密码专家和航空航天专家组成的团体。他们并不想搞破坏活动，由于经费不足，目前急需资助。他们成功地窃取了一颗“天网”卫星的资料，并对它进行遥控，切除了它和航天部的联系，改变卫星飞行的轨道。英国政府如果要收回卫星的控制权，必须交出赎金，否则他们就要把这颗卫星变成废铁。
由于英官方并没有公开澄清此事，所以一时间小道消息满天飞。虽然有人强调“天网”系统是封闭的系统，不可能由Internet入侵，但事实上，控制卫星的微波是开放的，截获卫星信号，夺取卫星控制权并非天方夜谭。一套信号发射系统只需要两只手提箱就可以装下，它们可以在任何地点被组装起来。而不间断地截获卫星信号，许多大学里的卫星天线就可以做到。所以单从技术上讲，“俘虏”卫星并非不可能。
